In the Edo period, Shinsaibashisuji, especially in the vicinity of Minamisemba, was known as a town of bookstores and an epicenter for the latest information. Today, the bookstores sell only books but back then, they published and sold used books as well.
The bookstores published many business related “how-to” books. Because the keen Osaka merchants studied about business from books as well as gaining the practical on-site experience, those books immediately became best sellers .
One of those best selling “how-to” books called "Hyakuninisshu Hitoyogatari" written by Kyubei Tsurugaya, resided where Kawachi is currently located, attracts people even now and is still available by Iwanami Bunko as one of the great books.
